Nail Surgery and Podiatrists
If non-invasive treatments don’t work for ingrown toenails, podiatrists may recommend surgery. There are two main types of surgical procedures: partial nail avulsion and total nail avulsion, which may include penalization, but not
always.
Partial Nail Avulsion
This procedure involves removing a small section from the side of the nail to help with any discomfort you might be experiencing. We’ll make sure your toe is numb before delicately removing the ingrown or infected part of the nail. After that, we’ll apply a special acid to the nail bed to prevent the removed section from growing back. You’ll be well taken care of throughout the entire process!
Total Nail Avulsion
In this surgical procedure, the aim is to remove the entire nail permanently under local anaesthetic. It’s similar to a partial nail avulsion, but the main difference is that the entire nail is removed. This procedure is chosen over a partial avulsion when the nail is too damaged for a successful outcome with partial removal.
What is nail surgery used to treat?
When conservative treatments haven’t worked, surgery on your nails can be a good option. This is often recommended for ingrown toenails and can also help with other nail conditions like fungal nails.
